| Welcome to the New Zealand Geothermal Workshop, New Zealand’s longest running energy conference. This year the workshop will be held on 21 – 23 November at the University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand.Investment and interest in geothermal energy is running red-hot. In New Zealand the installed generating capacity increased from 472MW in 2007 to 628MW in 2010 and more is in the pipeline or planned.
Internationally, the total global geothermal capacity has grown by 20% since 2005 to the current figure of almost 11GWe and more rapid growth is predicted. The International Geothermal Association projects growth to 18500MW by 2015. Thus the forces that are reinvigorating the geothermal energy market are global. In this buoyant climate for the geothermal industry we have chosen “Geothermal – Energy for the Future” as the theme for our Workshop in 2011. We welcome papers on all aspects of geothermal development – including the traditional engineering and geoscience topics and others such as environmental, economic, regulatory and societal issues.
